1st Llandysul Scouts: Building Skills and Broadening Horizons
The aim of 1st Llandysul Scouts is to help young people achieve their full potential as individuals and as responsible members of their communities. Its motto, “Grym yr Daioni”, translates as “Force for good”, an ethos reflected in the group’s outdoor activities, leadership development, teamwork and community service.
Its young people regularly support local initiatives, including litter picks, river clean-ups, food bank donation drives and community events. These experiences give members opportunities to build confidence and skills outside a traditional educational environment.
In August, the group travelled to Dublin, and for many, it was their first journey by ferry and their first visit to Ireland. The group stayed at Larch Hill International Scout and Guide Centre and enjoyed cultural visits including the National Museum of Ireland and Dublin Zoo.
The Scouts also gave something back to their host community. They completed voluntary work around the centre, improving an access road, clearing fallen branches and preparing a campfire area. Their contribution earned them Good Turn badges from the Larch Hill administrators. The campfire brought together Scouts from Ireland and volunteers from Germany, giving the young people another opportunity to connect across cultures.
Funding from the Delineate Community Commitment helped make the trip accessible to young people who would otherwise have faced a financial barrier. The experience encouraged independence, respect, practical skills and the confidence to travel away from home and try something new.
